The Cultural Revolution - Consequences

Consequences for the people
  • 1.5 million people were killed
  • Millions were imprisoned, had houses seized, were tortured or humiliated
  • 4 million high school and college graduates and 16 million students were sent to the farmlands
  • Citizens lost jobs and property
  • Citizens were forced to become peasants and work in the fields in order to earn money to feed their family
Effect on the Economy
  • It caused China's economy to collapse
  • Production was bad because workers were involved in political activity
  • The amount of rice and cotton produced dramatically decreased
  • As a result the price for rice, cotton fabrics and cloth increased
  • The decrease in industrial production resulted in problems in transport
