Consequences for the people
- 1.5 million people were killed
- Millions were imprisoned, had houses seized, were tortured
or humiliated
- 4 million high school and college graduates and 16 million students
were sent to the farmlands
- Citizens lost jobs and property
- Citizens were forced to become peasants and work in the
fields in order to earn money to feed their family
Effect on the Economy
- It caused China's economy to collapse
- Production was bad because workers were involved in
political activity
- The amount of rice and cotton produced dramatically
decreased
- As a result the price for rice, cotton fabrics and cloth
increased
- The decrease in industrial production resulted in problems
in transport
