Primary Schools
- In 1950's there was primary schooling across China
- Only 6.4% of the budget went on culture and education
- By 1956 fewer than half of children aged 7-16 were in full time education - still helped parents with work
- More focus on science and technology
- Many studied in Russia before 1959
- No opportunity to study in West
- Children of high ranking officials
- Children who passed an entrance exam
- Perpetuated inequality
- Phonetic Mandarin
- Officially adopted in 1956
- Helped to standardise language across China
- Helped make communications abroad easier
- August 1966 the central committee decided 16 points
- Point 10 focused on
- - Fewer but better courses and less schooling
- - Develop labourers with a socialist conscience
- - Eradicate bourgeois elements
- Schools and Universities were closed between 1966 and 1970
- 130 million young people no longer in education
- After 1968 red guards were sent to countryside and mountains - so still not in education
- When schools were brought back it was hard to bring back a respect for education
