The reunification campaigns

Guangdong
  • Former GMD stronghold where there were lots of nationalist supporters
  • Surrendered to the PLA only 2 weeks after the PRC was announced

Xinjiang
  • The Chinese government persuaded the KMT (who ruled Xinjiang) to surrender
  • So the take over was largely through political means
  • PLA entered Xinjiang in October 1949 and controlled most of the region by the spring of 1950
  • Han Chinese sent in to decrease the power of the muslim population and work on construction

Tibet
  • Tibet had been operating independently since 1913 and was determined to resist communist rule
  • The PLA invaded in 1950
  • 60, 000 attempted to resist the invasion
  • It took 6 months to establish control of the area
  • By May 1951 Tibet was under Chinese control
  • To try and destroy the Tibetan identity the PRC sent Han Chinese settlers into Tibet and promoting Chinese traditions
  • Resulted in rebellions in 1959 which were suppressed by the PLA
  • The Dalai Lama fled to India
