- Former GMD stronghold where there were lots of nationalist supporters
- Surrendered to the PLA only 2 weeks after the PRC was announced
Xinjiang
- The Chinese government persuaded the KMT (who ruled Xinjiang) to surrender
- So the take over was largely through political means
- PLA entered Xinjiang in October 1949 and controlled most of the region by the spring of 1950
- Han Chinese sent in to decrease the power of the muslim population and work on construction
Tibet
- Tibet had been operating independently since 1913 and was determined to resist communist rule
- The PLA invaded in 1950
- 60, 000 attempted to resist the invasion
- It took 6 months to establish control of the area
- By May 1951 Tibet was under Chinese control
- To try and destroy the Tibetan identity the PRC sent Han Chinese settlers into Tibet and promoting Chinese traditions
- Resulted in rebellions in 1959 which were suppressed by the PLA
- The Dalai Lama fled to India
