Mao's strengthening position

Democratic Centralism - In 1954 a new constitution was introduced that said 'all power in the people's republic belongs to the people.' A legislate that was elected by the public, the National People's Congress, was to meet once a year to make laws and edit the constitution. Mao called this 'Democratic Centralism'.

Mao's Vision - People were worried that the communist party would be repressive but Mao said he wanted to create a 'united front' where all classes would work together. They would have powers and work alongside the CCP which together would make China an egalitarian, modern nation. There was no mention of the terror that would later be used.

How Secure was Mao's Position? - As chairman of the CP and China's first Presidentand chair of the commission that controlled the armed forces. He essentially became the new emperor

How important was the PLA? - His control over the PLA helped enhance Mao's personal power
